Thompson earned three letters in basketball for the Cardinals, and was a member of the 1989-90 team which advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after posting wins over Oregon State and Louisville in the NCAA Tournament. Thompson was named to the 1990 NCAA All-West Regional Team and was hnored as the CBS Player of the Game for his performances against Louisville and UNLV in the 1990 NCAA Tournament. Thompson was named to the 1991 National Invitation Tournament All-Star Team, and received All-America honorable mention honors as a junior. As a senior, Thompson posted 19 double-figure scoring efforts, and became only the sixth player in Ball State history to score 1,000 points plus tally 500 rebounds in a career.
